Esta es una de mis canciones favoritas, el video también me gusta, y Xiu Xiu me encanta, nunca puedo tener demasiado. Su disco nuevo esta en mi lista del supermecado, lei por ahí que era toda una revelación, y es que el line up cambio nuevamente. Siempre cambia. Espero que este super bueno cuando finalmente me llegue a las manos. Es uno de esos discos que no quiero bajar ni escuchar hasta romper el papel celofán. Can't wait!

Conciencias Geográficas

El otro día me puse a pensar cuando fue que descubrí la ciudad de Nueva York. Después de meditarlo un poco me acorde que fue en una de las películas de este hombre: Harold Lloyd.

Solía verlas una y otra vez, me parecen aun muy buenas, atinadas y chistosas. El hizo montón de películas, y como Jackie Chan no le gustaba usar dobles para las escenas peligrosas. La mayoría son cintas mudas, casi todas filmadas en California y una que otra en NYC. Que buenos anteojos trae en la foto!

Buenas y malas pretensiones MtyMx y Nrmal

No le dije a ninguno de mis amigos que fuera al festival MtyMx, porque ya muchos lo tenian en mente, o sabia que de plano les caen gordos X o Y, organizadores o bandas y no iban a ir. Pasa mucho en Mty que la gente se da su taco y no asiste a eventos, porque es muy cool para ellos. Los gringos tienen una frase que siempre me recuerda a eso "too cool for school"

Anyhow, yo tenia muchas ganas de reencontrarme con mi tierra adoptiva (porque soy de Pachuca). Así como el muy sonado Todd P. iba directo de Brooklyn a Mty haciendo escala en Austin. Una amiga me paso el chisme que este hombre estaba recolectando muchachada para ayudarle a llevar la logística del festival MtyMx. Ni mi amiga ni yo nos enlistamos para ello, porque tenemos otras prioridades (como trabajar para pagar la renta).

Que bueno que Mty tuvo mucho que ofrecer estos dos últimos fines (por el festival Nrmal el fin pasado) pero que malo que en los dos no hubo tanta audiencia. En el MtyMx me entristece que sacrificaron mucho la calidad de la música y el confort de los asistentes (también por eso de los baños). Y todo esto es por juicios que he hecho leyendo las distintas notas de ambos festivales.

Pasara mucho tiempo para que Monterrey sea un epicentro musical de México. Pasara mucho tiempo también para que la inseguridad y las guerras de los carteles abandonen las ciudades y dejen de aterrorizar a mexicanos y extranjeros. Pasara mucho tiempo para que la gente en Mty y en otras ciudades unan esfuerzos o se comuniquen y hagan un evento que sea tan histórico, a turning point en México. Dejando un espacio a que la gente se recupere también económicamente. Si yo tengo la opción de

ir dos fiestas de todo el fin de semana y pasarme la suave sin estar apretada de dinero, solo iría a uno u el otro. No a los dos. La audiencia para ambos festivales es la misma tanto en la ciudad, como en el país. Y en el extranjero pfff pues la verdad es que a los gringos no les llama la atención México, mas que Cancun.

Creo que la pretensión de ambos festivales no es mala. Hay que ser ambicioso (en el buen sentido) para que eventos de estos pasen y crezcan. Para sobretodo dar ejemplo a los mas jóvenes, que hay cosas mejores que lo que ven en la televisión.

La pretensión de hacer estos festivales seguido uno del otro, para aprovechar la oleada de SXSW, y la inexperiencia fue lo que, como he leído les ha dejado un amargo sabor de boca a muchos.

Viendo las fotos me doy cuenta que en Nrmal era un ambiente muy escolar, pero con rock. Lo que me impresiono fueron sus áreas bien montadas de mercadito/arte/interacción/escenarios. Del festival MtyMx me gustaron que se podían hacer fogatas. El lugar es inmenso y con posibilidades infinitas, porque hay muchos arboles, espacio. Todo es cosa que le pongan un poco de ingenio y presupuesto. Cosa que es obvia que no tenían, y es valida. Un festival independiente.

Si me encuentro cerca de Mty el año que viene iré al festival que me ofrezca los baños mas limpios. Porque si de pasársela bien se trata, lo que menos quiero son incomodidades. (la selección musical también tendrá mucho que ver, obvio).

Paso este 20 de febrero y estuvo bbbruto! fue en el Bell House de Brooklyn. Habia muchos queers, chicos y chicas, todos bailando sin parar, mucho sudor y cerveza. Como debe de ser una buena tocada.

Men tiene tocando desde el otoño pasado, su EP tiene 3 canciones, pero tocaron unas 4 mas esa noche.

I love New York

This is one of the main reasons I like New York, because by law you have to take care of the things that can be recyclable and place them in color-code trash bags, in certain trash cans.
Too bad there is still people out there who are just too lazy to do it and cities that don't implement it.
Separating trash gives me a little relief that despite all the trash I make some of it is being reused! :)
Long time ago I have taken certain measures to reduce my waste, and it has been just for the best! Simple things like:

- You are going to be thirsty when you go out of your home carry your own water bottle like (a thermos) you'll save money not buying bottle sodas or water, you can lose weight if you refill your thermos on a water fountain :)

- If you really want to buy a drink buy it in a glass bottle or canned (it is most likely that most percentage of these materials will be recycled).

- Walk, ride a bike, use public transportation as much as you can, instead of using a car or a taxi.

- Always carry a tote bag with you. Whatever you buy carry it there. You will get rid of those annoying drawers full of plastic bags.

- When you buy food try to buy it on glass and cardboard containers for the most part.

- Commit to keep what you buy, try not to buy crap that you will get rid of by the end of the week or month...buy QUALITY, good taste, truly green and/or organic useful products, that will last years and years and you won't get tired of.

- Repair what you can

- When you don't want something trade it with friends, neighbors, craigslist, second hand stores etc. Get stuff you need from those places too. Enjoy the satisfaction of a good find!

- Unplug things you don't use all the time, like the TV, Stereo, etc they still suck on energy even turned off.

- Use rechargeable batteries. Change your bulbs for efficient ones and when they die recycle them properly because every single fluorescent light bulb has mercury! (I bet you didn't know that!)

- Keep the lights off if you are not in a room

- If you smoke, try out buying organic tobacco and papers so you will have to roll every single cigarette, you will smoke less because of that. And for God sake don't throw it to a lake, river, sea, puddle, grass, or floor, specially if it has filter (it takes over 10 years to disintegrate).

- Beauty and home cleaning green products cost a little more extra money, but some brands give you money back if you return their own packaging in your next buy.

- Print only what you really need at the office. If possible print in recycled paper. Ink cartridges can be recycled or refilled.

- Buy local produce from community gardens, farmers, etc.

OK these are too many steps, and there are way more things people could do, unfortunately there are people who don't do any at all.

It frustrates me, and I can only see the future of humanity as the airport in the Fifth Element film (people living among trash)

Sometimes people pull the emergency brake for nothing!

Well I have been there...in the subway with nothing to read, no one to talk to, or no video game, just reading and re reading the subway signs. The emergency brake sign is really unclear when to use it. It is called emergency brake, but the first rule is there is an emergency don't pull it.

Also I have been there, taking the train to get to an appointment, class, job, back home... and someone pulls the emergency brake of the train ahead or my train. There you are wasting your time, because someone fainted or got on the train sick or any other reason... (there are signs that advice you not to jump on the train when you feel sick).

Hotel Monterey

I feel like it is just right to post this. People that might read this would feel like it is beautiful and just worth of sharing.

I read this interview of Chantal Akerman, who is Belgian film maker. Her story is great, she documented NYC in the early 70's. Most of her films don't have dialogs and are very minimalistic. This clip speaks for itself.

She's got a recent DVDs release at Criterion (totally worth it)

HAUSU

A Japanese crazy horror film from 1977. Hilarious, scary and with all the cool random special effects from its time, plus nonsense teen nudity.

The story begins when a girl (bastante chifletas) finds out that his dad is marrying his new girlfriend. So in revenge she plans to go visit an aunt that lives outside the city and stay there for a while. I really don't know why all her friends decide to go with her, anyhow they all go and the trip is weird and beautiful. Some of the environment scenes seem to be made out of cardboard, just as if you were watching a Michel Gondry's movie, but you are not, because this one is way better (and cheaper).

When the girls get to the aunt's house spooky things start to happen. Oh, by the way the dialogs are also nonsense, just like the movie sequence, with tons and tons of blood. Best movie ever!

I knew about the film because they showed it at Monkeytown once.

Adiós Monketown!

Yesterday Aaron and I tried to go to see a gig, one of those noise artsy performances. I forgot my camera, again! It was at this place called Monkeytown, which is my favorite venue ever! and it is going to be closed maybe forever (I hope not) this weekend.
For the people who didn't have the experience of visiting it, it is the most intimate and comfortable place to see any band or performer, oh yes and a restaurant/bar at the front. The room where the shows take place is a square with 4 giant screens each with a projector, under the screens there are soft couches and short tables. It is not a cheap place, but it is worth it, believe me. You can order drinks or dinner while the musicians play in the center, surrounded by people. Best place ever, so sad it is closing.

I forgot to mention that the restrooms paintings/deco are very smart and voyeuristic. There are security video cams looking at you made with Sharpie. <3

Cobertor eléctrico

Cuando era niña, mi papá llevo un día la película de Calzoncín Inspector (1974) de Alfonso Arau. Si no la has visto alguien amablemente la subió al youtube aquí, esta súper chistosa y un poco surrealista.

Desafortunadamente no hay mucho escrito en internet sobre la película. Lo que les puedo decir es que es una comedia mexicana con crítica política y social hecha por Arau, quien ha hecho casi todas sus películas con su particular visión social, histórica y política. Para mi es el mejor exponente de cine de comedia de todos los tiempos en México. El Aguila Descalza (1971) es otro ejemplo, el personaje que escribe e interpreta Arau es un superhéroe que vive en una vecindad de algún barrio bajo del DF. Tiene poderes súper mongolos y si no mal recuerdo su otra vida es de albañil.

En este clip salen bailando el Inspector y doña Eme, quien es Carmen Salinas precalentando años antes para Aventurera! jeje

Some years ago I discovered this amazing old duo Ada & Bill (not the actor, but also a comedian). They have some really cool songs from the 10's and 20's that are naive, cute and with some witty lyrics.
